What is halloumi cheese?

If you’re thinking, “Wait, grilled cheese??” I get it! A slice of cheddar or mozzarella would melt through the grates. But not Halloumi. This cheese, originally from Cyprus, has a firm texture and a high melting point, so It can withstand all kinds of cooking methods.

Pan-fried, roasted, broiled, broiled or fried. Depending on the method you choose, the exterior will burn and become crisp and charred or golden brown, while the interior will become deliciously hot.

Halloumi is traditionally make

Halloumi is traditionally made from a mixture of goat’s milk and sheep’s milk, although commercial halloumi can also be found today made from cow’s milk. It tastes salty and savory and has a bit of funk to it. Although I cook halloumi all year round, I especially love it in the summer. It’s an incredibly tasty and satisfying plant-based protein that’s super easy to throw on the grill!

Here’s how it goes:

First Step

First, cut the halloumi into 1/2-inch-thick boards. Drizzle the planks with olive oil and use your hands to coat both sides. While preparing the halloumi, preheat an outdoor grill or grill pan.

Second Step

You want it piping hot when you add the cheese! This helps prevent sticking. Finally, Grilled Halloumi Cheese. Cook until grill marks form on both sides. It shouldn’t take long, just 2 or 3 minutes on each side.

Third Step

Here are some of my favorites Tips

  1. As an aperitif. Prepare it with slices of baguette, fresh herbs, and a tasty vinaigrette. I like it with mint and Greek seasoning or, for a sweet-salty combo, with honey. In salads. Make an unconventional Caprese salad with Grilled Halloumi Cheese instead of mozzarella. It would also be fantastic in a Panzanella or Greek salad!
  2. In a bun. Try it in Grilled Cauliflower Pitas with Halloumi and Harissa on page 211 of Everyday Love and Lemons, or swap it out for fresh mozzarella in these Capri sandwiches. I also love a sandwich with cheese, grilled eggplant and zucchini, grilled onions, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, and romesco sauce.
  3. In a bowl. Pair it with cilantro lime rice or coconut rice, black beans, and fruity salsa like mango salsa, pineapple salsa, or peach salsa. Add a drizzle of my cilantro-lime vinaigrette to tie it all together. A bowl with grilled halloumi, cooked farro or couscous, roasted tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, chopped cucumbers, olives, and Greek dressing is excellent.
